We’ve all seen the familiar sights of the season: the lilies on the altar, the “He is Risen” banners, and the flurry of Sunday best. But as we stand before the concept of the empty tomb once again, it’s worth asking: Does the resurrection still feel like news, or has it become just a notion?
It’s easy to let the miracle of Easter become a historical fact we file. We know the story, from the darkness of Friday to the silence of Saturday, and then the world-shattering victory of Sunday. Be that as it may, the power of Easter isn’t just that Jesus rose 2,000 years ago; it’s that He is alive today, interceding for us and offering a brand-new kind of life.
The Beauty of “It Is Finished”
Before we can truly celebrate the empty tomb, we must sit with the weight of the cross. When Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” He wasn’t just announcing the end of His physical suffering. He was declaring the end of our separation from God. The debt was paid. The veil was torn.
Because of that moment, Easter isn’t a reward for being “good enough.” It’s a gift for the broken, the weary, and the skeptical.
Living as “Resurrection People”
So, how do we take the joy of Easter into a random day or everyday?
- Trade Fear for Peace: The first words Jesus spoke to His terrified disciples after the resurrection were, “Peace be with you.” Whatever “tomb” you feel stuck in right now; grief, anxiety, or failure; the Risen Christ is standing there with you, offering peace that defies your circumstances.
- Look for New Growth: Just as spring blooms from the dead winter earth, God is constantly in the business of making things new. Where is He inviting you to start over this season?
- Share the Light: Easter is too good to keep to ourselves. This week, look for a way to be the hands and feet of Jesus to a neighbour or friend who needs to know that hope is real.
Beyond Easter, as we have shouted “He is risen indeed,” let it be more than a tradition. Let it be a reminder that because the tomb is empty, our lives can be full.
A Prayer for you
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the wonder of the empty tomb. Thank You that the story didn’t end on Friday, and that because Jesus lives, we can face tomorrow with hope. Today, we ask that the power of the resurrection would move from our heads to our hearts. Roll away the stones of doubt and fear in our lives, and fill us with the peace that only You can provide. May we live every day as people of the Light, reflecting Your grace to everyone we meet. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Reflection & Action
As we have celebrated the miracle of the resurrection, let’s not leave the joy at the church doors. This week, I challenge you to:
- Identify one “tomb” in your life (a worry, a habit, or a hurt) and surrender it to the Risen Christ.
- Reach out to one person who might be feeling lonely this season and share a simple word of encouragement.
How has the reality of the resurrection changed your perspective this year? Let’s start a conversation in the comments below!
